We are seeking a Senior Vice President, Business Development for our Sompo Canadian team in our Toronto, Ontario office. This position will support our Canadian Domestic platform.
Job Summary:
The SVP, Business Development is a strategic role with decision making responsibility and strong influence that will lead the effort to raise corporate profile, effectiveness, and reputation by deepening and extending our agency relationships and impacting strategic initiatives and business development efforts. The role will evolve as the business expands and grows. Initial efforts will be to help set up brokers and leverage existing relationships to ensure submission flow. Working with the leadership team to develop the growth strategy over the next 5 years.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Support Sompo North America’s financial and strategic goals by maximizing production with brokers
- Develop the Canadian Business Development Plan that directly supports all Sompo’s Canadian Domestic Business Units and products (Property, Casualty, Financial and Specialty Lines)
- Gain deep understanding of each underwriting team’s risk appetite and broker distribution strategy for assigned region
- Develop and execute strategic business development plans to generate new leads, drive sales, and achieve revenue targets.
- Build and nurture relationships with key decision-makers, such as internal executives, risk managers, and brokers.
- Conduct market research and analysis to identify emerging trends, competitive intelligence, and growth opportunities within the commercial insurance industry.
- Collaborate with internal teams, including underwriters and product specialists, to develop customized insurance solutions that meet client needs and address risk exposures.
- Prepare and deliver persuasive presentations, proposals, and quotations to potential clients, effectively articulating the value proposition and differentiators of our commercial insurance products and services.
- Negotiate broker contract terms and conditions, ensuring profitability and compliance with company guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Actively participate in industry events, conferences, and trade shows to enhance brand visibility and expand professional networks.
- Coordinate event planning in the Canadian marketplace as needed.
Qualifications include:
- Minimum of 15 years of industry experience with responsibilities encompassing underwriting, product development, risk management, distribution strategy, needs assessment, and client relationship management
- Highly visible and well known to the Canadian broker community
- Deep understanding of Canadian market and broker distribution strategies
- Strong sales presentation and persuasion skills
- Must be comfortable with negotiating and leveraging a sales approach
- Passionate, energetic, self-motivated, organized, and team player
- Perseveres in a growing, changing, and dynamic work environment
