The primary purpose of this position is to lead and implement the strategic vision and plan of assigned product line(s). Provide leadership, direction and support to underwriting team(s) and/or direct reports. Is responsible for product profitability, growth and retention of new and renewal business that is consistent with underwriting strategies. Manage assigned product line(s) to achieve profit, revenue, loss ratio, and expense targets. Ensure effective execution of best practices. Provide coaching and training for underwriting staff based on results of underwriting audit review. Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (Actuarial, Product Development, Claim, IT, Operations, Regulatory, etc.) to coordinate services to customers and ensure that superior products are being delivered to our internal and external customers.
What you'll be doing:
- Underwrite a book of business primarily including EPL and W&H risks for a client base of Fortune 1000 and large professional service firms;
- Negotiate with brokers on program structure, premiums, retentions and terms and conditions;
- Maintain up-to-date familiarity with economic and legal factors impacting the EPL and W&H portfolio and the overall insurance industry;
- Analysis of coverage and contract language based on industry accepted policy forms;
- Assist in management of book rates, aggregate exposure and other aspects of book performance;
- Assist in establishing underwriting guidelines and procedures;
- Take lead role in client/underwriter meetings (in-person or remotely) in order to quantify and assess inherent risks and exposures;
- Assist in the development and implementation of new products;
- Engage in cross-selling the Company’s products and services across platforms;
- Ability to participate in broker roundtables, industry conferences and similar in order to promote and discuss the Company’s products and services;
- Meet outlined objectives related to quote/binder turnaround, policy issuance, renewal management, file maintenance and documentation;
- Ability to work extended hours and travel at short notice.
What we're looking for:
- A minimum of 5 years experience in underwriting, claims and/or brokering for professional liability; a recent focus in EPL and W&H product lines would be beneficial;
- Four-year degree in business or related field from an accredited University/College;
- Experience with industry accepted policy forms and strong working knowledge of applicable endorsement wordings;
- Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate effectively, and excellent negotiation skills;
- Strong analytical and organizational skills and excellent problem solving/decision making abilities;
- Must be a team player and able to work independently as needed.
