The opportunity:
International Finance is responsible for the financial, regulatory, and business reporting of Markel International and its subsidiaries. It is part of Markel Group’s Global Finance Department.
You will ensure high-quality and timely finance support by leading the customer relationship between Finance and senior business stakeholders within UK National Markets.
This is an exciting opportunity to support the business strategy, producing financial elements for written business plans, including potential acquisitions and the launch of new business lines or markets.
What you’ll be doing:
- Management Information Provision: Delivering high-quality and timely Management Information that summarizes business performance against plan, prior year, and strategic priorities. This includes metrics related to Gross Written Premium (GWP), productivity, loss and expense ratios, and overall business profitability.
- Timely Financial Performance Responses: Addressing all queries related to financial performance promptly.
- Business Planning Support: Ensuring timely receipt of necessary inputs from business divisions to support planning cycles. Facilitating effective “play-back” to business stakeholders to ensure ownership of final business plans.
- Finance Education Sessions: Providing necessary finance education sessions to senior business stakeholders, enhancing their understanding of how business results are generated at Markel.
- Alignment with Reporting Standards: Maintaining close liaison with the Head of Financial and Regulatory reporting to ensure that management results communicated to the business align with US GAAP reported numbers.
- Collaboration with wider Business Partnering Team: Whilst local business requirements are a priority for this role, maintaining close ties with the wider business partnering team will also be critical. This will not only ensure a consistent approach to customer delivery but ensure that we are effectively using the skills, experience and resources of the wider team.
- Team Leadership: The role includes one direct report.
Our must-haves:
- Qualified or qualified by experience accountant.
- Detailed knowledge of insurance accounting preferably with experience of US GAAP.
- Ability to lead a small team responsible for delivering a wider range of regular reporting requirements, as well as the adaptability to respond to ad-hoc business support requests.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of business stakeholders.
- Proficiency with standard finance systems e.g. Microsoft Excel. Preferably (but not essentially) experience with systems used by Markel i.e. Anaplan, Oracle Fusion & Alteryx.
