This position reports to the Regional Product Leader and is responsible for managing a team of commercial production underwriters and execution of organizational goals and objectives. Ensure effective execution of strategic plans in conjunction with the Regional Product Leader, Regional President, and Product Line Leadership.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead, develop and manage a team of high-performing underwriters to drive profitable growth for Markel’s Cyber/Tech portfolio
- Train new underwriters, and create development plans to upskill underwriting talent across the team
- Portfolio analysis and collaboration with key stakeholders to identify and execute opportunities to improve both top and bottom-line performance
- Build and maintain strong relationship with brokers throughout the region to enhance Markel’s reputation and market presence
- Develop and execute marketing and distribution plans across the teams with cross team collaboration as appropriate
- Obtain high level underwriting authority and act as the primary referral point for your team, and maintain a personal book of business
- Adhere to the rules, rates, forms, authority and underwriting guidelines as delegated by Product Line Leadership group
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as claims, legal, and Property & Casualty underwriting
- Build and maintain strong working relationships across workgroups with flexibility to change direction quickly based on business needs
- Responsible for evaluating procedures and practices and implementing changes to improve workflows; ensures all business transactions and practices within span of control comply with all legal regulations and are in compliance with all underwriting policies and procedure
- Maintain an understanding of assigned product(s), services and solutions and initiates discussions with other workgroups as appropriate
- Drive change and innovation through continually seeking and implementing transformational solutions for customers and our associates.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 6-8 years of underwriting expertise
- Experience in creating and executing strategic sales and distribution plans
- Portfolio management experience
- Proven record of growing profitable books of business with key broker partners
- Experience leading, developing and recruiting talent
- Superior verbal and written communication skills
- Collaborative management style
- High energy, pro-active self-starter; someone with a strong sense of urgency
- Demonstrated ability in setting and meeting objectives and getting peers and subordinates to “buy in” through superior influencing skills
- Interpersonal skills necessary to achieve desired goals and to interact effectively as well as a high level of confidence, integrity, energy and enthusiasm, executive presence and a personality that fits the “Markel Style"
- Undergraduate degree required
- Ability to travel 25%.

Pay information:
The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Underwriting Manager position is $116k - $159k/year with a 30% bonus potential.
