Velocity Risk, a subsidiary of Ryan Specialty, is seeking an experienced Underwriter II to join our dynamic team. This role is ideal for professionals passionate about specialty property insurance and eager to contribute to a fast-paced, data-driven environment focused on catastrophe-prone risks.
Velocity Risk specializes in Excess & Surplus Property insurance, offering tailored solutions for businesses exposed to hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, and other catastrophic perils. What will your job entail?
As a Large Commercial Underwriter II, you are responsible for analyzing and underwriting business for Commercial Lines to meet Combined Ratio and capital metric goals. You will be responsible for a $15-25M book of business while developing a team of Underwriter I’s and Underwriter Trainees. You will utilize your underwriting expertise to help determine risk acceptability, pricing, underwriting guidelines, developing positive agency relationships within assigned territories, auditing underwriting files and accounts and improving on underwriting processes. Partnering with other departments and your colleagues, you will provide insights and feedback on ways to further improve and develop the products and services offered.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own a $15–25M Book of Business:Analyze and underwrite complex risks to meet capital metrics and achieve targeted combined ratios.
- Support Strategic Goals:Partner with Senior Underwriters to uphold underwriting excellence and contribute to business unit success through sound decision-making and adherence to best practices.
- Build and Strengthen Broker Relationships:Cultivate new producer partnerships and deepen existing ones to drive profitable growth.
- Collaborate Across Teams:Work closely with the broader Commercial Lines team and cross-functional departments to enhance product offerings and service delivery.
- Lead and Mentor:Manage and coach Underwriting Assistants and provide guidance to Underwriter I’s, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.

- Trusted Professional:Demonstrated discretion and integrity in handling confidential information.
Your Background:
- Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Insurance, or a related field—or equivalent industry experience.
- Minimum of 3 years in commercial insurance underwriting.
- Professional designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM) are a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).

The target salary range for this position is $85,855.00 - $90,000.00 annually.
The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
