Underwriter
- Excellent development opportunity
- Kickstart your Underwriting career
- Fully in the office for initial training period, progressing to hybrid role with 80% homeworking and 20% in York
About the role:
Are you ready to take the next step in your insurance career? We’re looking for a motivated and customer-focused individual to join our growing high-net-worth underwriting team in York. This is a fantastic opportunity to start and develop your career within underwriting, working with high-value home insurance products and supporting our agency network across the UK.
As an Underwriter, you’ll review and evaluate insurance risks, propose and negotiate policy terms, and ensure all activities align with NFU Mutual’s underwriting principles and risk appetite. You’ll play a vital role in delivering first-class customer service and robust risk management, helping us achieve great outcomes for our members and the business.
You’ll be part of a dynamic regional service centre team, reporting to the Team Leader. The York team is expanding, providing essential support to agencies nationwide. You’ll work closely with colleagues in both York and Bristol, as well as with agents, claims, and senior technicians to deliver seamless service and effective solutions.
Our team specialises in underwriting bespoke, high-value home insurance products for high-net-worth clients. Day-to-day, you’ll handle new business, mid-term adjustments, and renewals, liaising with the agency network via inbound calls and emails. Your work ensures policy terms are robust, risks are appropriately assessed, and both business and customer outcomes are optimised. You’ll also collaborate with other departments to deliver effective solutions and maintain strong stakeholder relationships.
You’ll receive comprehensive technical training, with opportunities for personal development and progression towards a more senior underwriting role.
This role is based in our York office, and will be fully office-based during your initial training period. However, we understand how important a positive work-life balance is, so to help you give your best, we offer great facilities when you want to be in an office environment and support to work up to 80% of your hours from home after training.
About you:
You’re an organised and detail-focused professional with proven experience in an administrative role or report writing. You take pride in delivering exceptional customer service—whether that’s face-to-face, over the phone, or in writing—and ideally, you’ve worked in sectors such as property, real estate, insurance, or luxury goods.
You’re confident engaging with a range of stakeholders and can build strong working relationships across the business. Your written communication is clear and professional, and you’re comfortable influencing and negotiating to achieve the right outcomes. You manage your time effectively, make sound decisions, and always keep an eye out for ways to improve how things are done. Most importantly, you bring a learning mindset—ready to develop your technical knowledge and grow your career in underwriting.
Skills assessed during the recruitment process:
- Previous experience in an administrative role or evidence of report writing
- Proven customer service skills, ideally with exposure to the luxury goods, property, real estate, or insurance sectors
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with excellent attention to detail
- Logical, solution-focused mindset and willingness to learn
- Systems experience (Microsoft Word, Excel, Dynamics, Teams)
- Insurance qualification (CII) desirable, or willingness to study towards it
