The AVP, Risk and Compliance, is responsible for leading a team that provides independent, objective assurance and consulting services designed to: Strengthen the organization’s internal auditing, controls and compliance structure; promote internal controls, fraud and risk awareness, and evaluate related activities; monitor/test and identify opportunities for process and control improvements; monitor compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; safeguard assets, and share best practices throughout the company. This role is accountable to oversee Sovereign’s execution of all enterprise certification and compliance programs in the identification, testing and reporting of internal controls and provides regular reporting to senior management and the Co-operators Audit and Finance Committee. In addition, the role is responsible for championing Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and the Enterprise Risk Management program within Sovereign and oversight of building appropriate risk frameworks.
How you will create impact:
- Facilitate strategic risk management exercises with Sovereign’s Executive Team, including the identification, modelling, and monitoring of top risks and emerging risks
- Develop and oversee the annual plan for Sovereign’s Operational Risk Management program, including establishing processes, timelines, and best practices.
- Assess and provide an opinion on the adequacy and effectiveness of the business unit’s governance, including the processes for controlling its activities and managing its risks in the areas set forth under the mission and scope of work, including potential improvements.
- Spearhead effective partnerships with other oversight functions including Enterprise Risk Management, Audit Services, Enterprise Compliance, and Information Security by appropriately aligning work and identifying synergies.
- Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
To join our team:
- Demonstrated knowledge of related social, political, regulatory, technological, and economic factors that impact commercial insurance business, to influence risk management practices.
- 10+ years experience in the commercial insurance industry in progressive leadership roles.
- Exceptional ability to develop cross-functional business partnerships, build consensus and successfully manage and resolve contentious issues.
- Experience introducing and leveraging compliance tools and systems.
- Ability to develop and manage complex and dynamic events during periods of significant change
- Certified Internal Auditor preferred.
- Certified Fraud Examiner (CPE) preferred.
- CIP or FCIP an asset
- This position primarily works with majority non-francophone groups, and teams located outside of Québec, and requires proficiency in English. The essential non-French duties are not assignable to adjacent or other team members.

Expected salary $142,526 - $ 237, 544
The salary amount for the successful candidate is determined by Co-operators in its discretion and will vary depending on several criteria including but not limited to: local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education.”
