Description
As a Senior Underwriter, you will oversee building out the CFC Management Liability, FinTech and Financial Institutions product suites in Spain, underwriting and growing broker relationships, with a longer-term strategy to build out a complete underwriting team.
Working closely with the International ML Practice Leader and Financial Institutions Practice Leader, you will help contribute to the annual business plan, and take the lead on building new business initiatives, and implementing them successfully.
You will help develop the future team with technical training, coaching and development of more junior and new team members, as well as providing guidance to the team on underwriting practices, policies, and guidelines. You will also assist with other pan-European relationships across the Financial Lines areas.
Role to based in Barcelona or Madrid.
About the role
Underwriting
- Underwrite both new business and renewals to drive business development, support workflow, and handle underwriting referrals from junior underwriters and team members as required.
- Conduct regular monitoring of NB and renewals performance against budget and take appropriate actions to address any areas of underperformance in consultation with line manager.
- Support the Practice Leader with the creation of the annual team budget/plan and assist with the implementation and execution of business development projects and initiatives.
- Contribute to chairing team meetings with a formalised agenda and generally support the Practice Leader in sharing key business development issues and bring thought leadership to meetings.
- Help to drive product advancement and territory-based deviances for product & underwriting strategy (as required), to ensure we deliver a compelling proposition for brokers and customers.
- Ensure that team ‘ways of working’ for business development (such as CRM data entry) are consistent and adhered to by all team members.
- Develop and maintain knowledge across CFC products to enable cross-selling opportunities for the wider business. Updating the renewal spreadsheet regularly including chasing outstanding renewals.
Client management & business development
- Primary responsibility for team broker liaison and developing strong team broker relationships with new and existing brokers and working with the Practice Leader to build CFC’s external brand.
- Creation of territorial distribution plan and work with the Practice Leader to execute according to the LTP.
- Design and deliver engaging broker presentations (working with Marketing and Distribution teams as required) and ensure a regular calendar of broker presentations.
- Work with the Distribution team to coordinate business development initiatives, activities, and broker meetings (e.g. join-up with Distribution on geographical meetings / business trips etc.).
- Attend relevant industry/market external events and look for opportunities to interact and engage often with new and existing brokers.
Team operations
- Assist the senior Management Liability management team with day-to-day team operations, including team meetings, peer reviews and maintaining effective policies, practices, and procedures.
- Help ensure that underwriting policies, processes, and guidelines are adhered to by junior and new team members, to meet all compliance, regulatory and binder requirements.
- Identify development needs in the team, and provide coaching, buddying, and technical training to more junior and new team members.
- Support with reviews of team operations to ensure best practice underwriting practices exist and assist the senior Transaction Liability management team in implementing areas of improvement.
Other
- Help to embed a high-performance culture across the Financial Lines team and champion CFC’s core values, culture, and ethos.
- Contribute to thought leadership, research and knowledge sharing within the Financial Lines team.
- Support and assist with the creation of the annual team budget/plan as required and assist with the implementation and execution of the underwriting strategy.
About you
- Extensive experience in Financial Lines underwriting or underwriting management, preferably with an insurance carrier or wholesale broker.
- Strong background and expertise in Financial Institutions, Management Liability or Fintech business.
- Proven track record in delivering profitable results over multiple years across the region.
- A good understanding of the regulatory obligations for underwriting and distribution of insurance products.
- Experience working cross‑functionally to bring new propositions to market, alongside strong sales and broker relationship management capability.
- An experienced professional whose expertise is recognised externally, who has a strong working knowledge of the insurance market and competitors.
- Solid experience of dealing with brokers and clients with existing relationships
- Results driven with ability to make own decisions and work on own initiative
- Ability to execute and influence at all levels both internally and externally
- Fluent level in English, including verbal and written communication skills
