Job Opportunity
BHSI has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Underwriter to join the Ocean Marine underwriting team in our New York City, Chicago, Boston or Houston office. Join the Marine team as you’ll get to work with a highly collaborative and close-knit underwriting team. This is a great environment for you to develop your underwriting career in the Property & Casualty insurance industry and work with a knowledgeable team with deep expertise in Marine.
As a Senior Underwriter, you will be working very closely with our Product Line Leader to source, underwrite and service Ocean Marine Cargo and Stock Throughput opportunities. You will be able to leverage experience and expertise to make sound underwriting decisions. You will also work on expanding your broker and customer relationships and network whilst working with the team distribution strategy. You will develop an understanding of the team’s appetite and Marine Insurance policy wordings and ultimately support the team in reviewing and issuing documents.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Underwrite and service existing portfolio of Ocean Marine Cargo & STP risks, whilst collaborating closely with Product Line Leader to grow the portfolio
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities consistent with BHSI underwriting appetite and growth objectives
- Work directly with brokers, and senior underwriters to assess risk profiles
- A great team environment but autonomy to make your own decisions with a suite of resources to support your decision-making process
- Learn BHSI underwriting principles and flexible deal structuring on the job
- Represent BHSI at industry functions, broker meetings, and customer events
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- 3-10 years of work experience.
- Ocean Marine Cargo & STP Underwriting experience
- Demonstrated ability to independently underwrite, structure, negotiate, and manage complex Marine risks
- Established broker relationships and network
- Strong verbal communication – comfortable picking up the phone and thinking on your feet
- High energy, hard-working, and loves to multi-task
- Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively
- Eager to learn and open to feedback – a “sponge” mindset
- Professionalism, reliability, and a no-excuses attitude

The base salary range for this position in New York is $110,000 - $150,000, along with annual bonus eligibility; a candidate’s salary is determined by their relevant skills and experience. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.
