Job Opportunity
BHSI is building its AI and Emerging Technology function from the ground up, with a clear mandate: governed from day one. The Senior AI Technology Lead is the first technical hire within this function and one of the most consequential roles we are filling.
This role is responsible for how AI is built at BHSI. You will serve as the technical AI expert across the enterprise, working in close partnership with the heads of Data, Architecture, Infrastructure, Security, and Software Engineering to embed hands-on AI expertise into every layer of development. You will help shape the patterns, standards, and guardrails that determine how AI moves from idea to production at scale across a specialty insurance environment that demands rigor, defensibility, and trust.
You will report to the SVP of AI and Emerging Technology and operate as a peer to Staff and Principal engineers and architects across the firm.
Duties &Responsibilities
AI Technical Delivery
- Lead hands-on design and delivery for high-priority AI initiatives, from prototype through production
- Contribute to reusable frameworks for model development, evaluation, versioning, and monitoring
- Ensure AI systems are scalable, maintainable, and consistent with enterprise standards — in active partnership with Architecture and Infrastructure
- Advise on build versus buy decisions and evaluate third-party AI vendors and platforms
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Work closely with the heads of Data, Architecture, Infrastructure, Security, and Software Engineering as the dedicated AI technical voice within those relationships
- Embed AI expertise into existing engineering workflows rather than operating in parallel
- Translate complex AI concepts for non-technical stakeholders, including underwriting, operations, and finance
- Bring AI-specific requirements and constraints into enterprise planning and design conversations
Governance and Risk
- Contribute to AI engineering standards covering model risk, bias evaluation, explainability, and audit readiness
- Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Risk to ensure AI systems meet regulatory obligations and internal controls
- Build governance and documentation into the development lifecycle from the start, not as an afterthought
Team and Culture
- Help shape the technical culture and hiring bar for the AI team as it grows
- Mentor engineers and architects across the firm on AI best practices
- Stay current on emerging AI research and tooling, bringing relevant advances back to BHSI with clear applicability assessments
Required
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Demonstrated track record of delivering production-grade AI systems in complex enterprise environments

- Strong technical communication skills: able to write clearly, present to leadership, and document decisions with precision
- Experience navigating cross-functional environments and influencing without direct authority
Strongly Preferred
- Experience in regulated industries, particularly financial services or insurance
- Familiarity with model risk management frameworks, AI governance requirements, or equivalent compliance contexts
- Exposure to LLM-based systems, retrieval-augmented generation, or AI agent architectures in an enterprise setting
