Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Senior Casualty Claims Specialist in our Moderate Severity Casualty.
This position primarily focuses on the execution of claim handling responsibilities for primary and excess Auto and GL claims. The candidate must possess strong claim technical acumen, legal insight, accuracy, responsiveness and display a high degree of customer service. The successful candidate must be able to manage casualty claims while providing insight and analysis on claim exposures to management and our underwriting partners. The applicant must be an effective verbal and written communicator and work well in a team environment. The candidate must be agile, effective at priority setting, willing to travel to attend mediations (under proper conditions), and one who excels at interaction with internal and external customers, underwriters, peers and management.
Location: This position will be based out of our New York, NY; Purchase, NY; Garden City, NY; Morristown, NJ; Charlotte, NC; Miami, Fl; Chicago, IL; or Alpharetta, GA office. What you’ll be doing:
Manage a casualty claims portfolio involving significant bodily injury, property damage, and coverage issues.
Conduct coverage and exposure analysis, establish appropriate reserves, and identify severity issues early.
Communicate key developments promptly with management, underwriters, and other stakeholders.
Oversee assigned counsel and execute claim strategies to control expenses and resolve litigated matters.
Maintain accurate, timely claim documentation, correspondence, diaries, and portfolio trend analysis in line with company standards.
Support renewals, policy and endorsement drafting, negotiations, and ongoing technical knowledge-sharing across the team.
What you’ll bring:
BA/BS degree required; Juris Doctor preferred.
Insurance-related designations such as CPCU, IIA, or SCLA are a plus.
7–10 years of experience in a technical insurance claims role or insurance defense law firm.
Strong ability to assess coverage, tender opportunities, reserving, underlying claim files, and resolve claims, including through mediation.
Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with underwriting and support marketing efforts.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, work independently, and use systems such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and claims platforms like Guidewire, Genius, and ImageRight.
Willing to travel to attend mediations when needed.
Salary Range: $125,000 – $175,000. Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
