Position Summary
Ryan Specialty is seeking an experienced and market-facing Assistant Vice President, Cyber Underwriter to join our growing Cyber team in New York.
This role is responsible for underwriting complex cyber risks, cultivating strategic relationships with leading retail brokerage firms, and driving profitable portfolio growth. The AVP will serve as a trusted underwriting partner to brokers, leveraging deep industry knowledge and strong market relationships to identify opportunities, structure solutions, and deliver exceptional service.
The ideal candidate possesses a strong cyber underwriting background, an established presence within the retail brokerage community, and experience collaborating with sophisticated clients and brokers on complex placements. This individual combines strong underwriting judgment with a commercial mindset and a passion for business development.
What will your job entail?
Underwriting Leadership
- Evaluate, select, structure, and price complex cyber risks within delegated underwriting authority.
- Analyze account exposures, loss experience, financial information, cybersecurity controls, and coverage requirements.
- Develop tailored insurance solutions that align with client needs, portfolio objectives, and underwriting strategy.
- Exercise sound underwriting judgment while balancing growth, retention, and profitability goals.
- Maintain expertise in evolving cyber threats, industry trends, and market developments.
Broker Relationship Management & Market Development
- Develop and maintain strategic relationships with retail brokers across the New York and broader Northeast marketplace.
- Serve as a trusted underwriting partner and primary point of contact for key broker relationships.
- Execute a proactive marketing strategy to enhance market visibility, generate submission flow, and support portfolio growth.
- Conduct broker meetings, agency visits, presentations, and underwriting discussions.
- Represent Ryan Specialty at industry conferences, networking events, and broker engagement activities.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities through existing relationships and targeted business development efforts.
- Promote Ryan Specialty's Cyber capabilities and appetite throughout the retail marketplace.
Portfolio Growth & Strategy
- Contribute to the execution of Cyber underwriting strategy and portfolio objectives.
- Manage a profitable portfolio through disciplined risk selection, pricing, and relationship management.
- Monitor market developments, competitive activity, and emerging risks to identify growth opportunities.
- Partner with leadership to support long-term portfolio expansion and strategic initiatives.
- Contribute market intelligence and broker feedback to business planning discussions.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with underwriting, claims, legal, compliance, operations, and leadership teams to deliver exceptional service and solutions.
- Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal controls.
- Share technical expertise and market insights across the broader organization.
- Support a collaborative culture focused on underwriting excellence and client service.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 6+ years of Cyber, Professional Liability, Financial Lines, or related specialty underwriting experience.
- Demonstrated success building and maintaining relationships within the retail brokerage marketplace.
- Proven track record growing a profitable portfolio through strong underwriting discipline and business development.
- Experience evaluating and placing complex commercial risks.
- Strong understanding of broker distribution and the placement process for sophisticated commercial insurance programs.
- Established relationships within the New York and Northeast insurance market strongly preferred.
Preferred Background
- Experience partnering with national and regional retail brokerage firms.
- Strong market credibility and demonstrated ability to develop new business opportunities.
- Proven success operating in a highly visible, externally facing underwriting role.
- Experience managing broker engagements, presentations, and marketing initiatives.
Education & Professional Designations
- Bachelor's degree required.
- CPCU, RPLU, AU, ARM, or similar professional designations preferred.
- Appropriate insurance licensing preferred.

The target salary range for this position is $168,000.00 - $210,000.00 annually.
The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
