Opportunity
BHSI has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Underwriter to join our Excess & Surplus Lines Small Commercial team. Based in Atlanta or Boston, this new role will underwrite General Liability and Property business and contribute to the profitable growth of the new E&S Small Commercial product.
You will evaluate, select, and price small commercial accounts while building productive relationships with distribution partners and intermediaries. You will also work with management to help build the small commercial platform, product offering, underwriting appetite, guidelines, and policy forms.

Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the build-out and profitable growth of the E&S Small Commercial book by applying disciplined underwriting practices to General Liability and Property business.
- Evaluate, select, structure, and price small commercial accounts to support appropriate risk selection and sustainable portfolio performance.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with distribution partners and intermediaries to generate aligned opportunities and provide responsive service.
- Partner with management to develop the small commercial platform and product offering, including underwriting appetite, guidelines, and policy forms.
- Analyze account information and organize underwriting priorities to make timely, well-supported decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Represent BHSI with integrity in the marketplace and collaborate across the team to deliver customer-focused solutions.
Key Skills
- Small commercial underwriting judgment: Apply Property and Casualty underwriting expertise to assess risk, determine terms and pricing, and make sound account decisions.
- Risk analysis and account selection: Evaluate account information, distinguish relevant risk characteristics, and select business consistent with underwriting objectives.
- Product and policy knowledge: Interpret policy forms and apply underwriting appetite and guidelines consistently while contributing practical input to product development.
- Broker relationship management: Communicate clearly and build productive relationships with distribution partners and intermediaries.
- Organization and collaboration: Manage competing priorities and work effectively with management and teammates to advance the platform and product offering.
Qualifications
- Typically, 5 or more years of relevant Small Commercial underwriting experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience applying the required capabilities.
- Demonstrated Small Commercial insurance experience with an insurance carrier, brokerage firm, or comparable commercial insurance environment.
- Technical underwriting capability across Property and Casualty, including risk evaluation, account selection, pricing, and coverage analysis.
- Experience interpreting policy forms and applying underwriting appetite, guidelines, or comparable underwriting controls.
- Ability to analyze information, organize competing priorities, and communicate underwriting decisions clearly in writing and verbally.
- Experience building effective relationships with distribution partners, intermediaries, management, and teammates.
- Ability to work from the Atlanta or Boston office.

The base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $135,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
