What part will you play? If you’re looking for a place where you can make a meaningful difference, you’ve found it.
Markel Group, a Fortune 500 company, is a growing family of 24 operating companies. It is supported by over 22,000 associates and generates more than $15 billion in annual revenue, with our insurance operations at the core.
Our small holding company team “sits under” and supports these businesses, insuring they focus on serving their customers over the long term. Our mission is to be “the best home for our businesses,” while at the same time living the values that we call the Markel Style.
We aspire to build one of the world’s great companies by creating win-win-win outcomes for our customers, associates, and shareholders.
This is a generalist role that supports our mission in a wide variety of ways—ranging from organizing leadership gatherings, overseeing elements of our risk program, developing internal capabilities, and supporting special projects across the team. You will report directly to the COO and work closely with leaders of the holding company team.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, thrives in ambiguity, and cares deeply about long-term impact. A consulting or similar background is helpful, as the work often requires structured thinking, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to drive outcomes without direct authority.
Responsibilities: You’ll work on high-priority projects that support our mission to be the best home for our businesses, including:
- Plan and execute team and leadership events to build culture, relationships, and alignment across our organization
- Oversee our risk program, ensuring we manage key risks that could undermine our long-term success; partner closely with our head of internal audit
- Develop and coordinate internal priorities and initiatives aimed at improving how we support our businesses
- Support functional capability building for the holding company team—particularly in areas where we currently rely on borrowed resources from operating companies (e.g., HR)
- Take on special projects such as helping with office space planning, onboarding materials, or internal communications
- Support leadership development efforts including designing training, planning gatherings, and creating related content
- Contribute to board engagement, including meeting planning and materials preparation
- Help create and deliver content that explains how our company works—both internally and externally
Qualifications
- ~5–10 years of professional experience
- Demonstrated success in managing complex, cross-functional projects
- Experience in risk management, internal audit, or operations a plus
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor's degree required
