The primary purpose of this position is to lead the Casualty product line in Bermuda and Europe to position Markel as a market leader within casualty for the capacity deployed into the US marketplace through these platforms. This role involves knowledge of the primary and excess casualty products, ability to differentiate strategies across industries, setting strategic multiyear plans and leadership of the Bermuda and Europe teams to drive profitable growth. The role will leverage an established understanding of business dynamics and regulations in Bermuda to position Markel as an industry leader in the casualty market.
Job Responsibilities
- Sets the Casualty strategy for Markel within Bermuda and Europe with a lens towards driving profitable growth across the platform.
- Develops new products and areas of the market within Casualty that will position Markel as a leader within Casualty in Bermuda.
- Responsible for overall product performance relative to established growth, profit and combined ratio targets.
- Set the underwriting guidelines and appetite for the Casualty product in Bermuda and Europe to ensure a quality underwriting work product is delivered within the marketplace.
- Delegates underwriting authority to underwriting staff via letters of authority and provides support to the underwriting teams to ensure referrals are minimized.
- Presents to senior management on key indicators, metrics, and drivers as part of portfolio management.
- Acts as the Casualty expert within the Bermuda and Europe teams on industry trends and actively develops the team(s) through coaching and training programs.
- Travel requirement: 25%
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or a related field.
- Professional insurance qualifications (e.g., CPCU, ARM) preferred.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in casualty insurance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of Bermuda's insurance market and regulatory environment.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to develop and execute on strategic plans.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
