We have a fantastic opportunity for a Head of Political Violence & Terrorism to join our Special Risks department here at Tokio Marine Kiln. Reporting to the Departmental Head of Special Risks, the role is responsible for developing, managing, and executing the underwriting strategy for TMK’s Political Violence and Terrorism business. This role requires deep technical expertise in analysing and pricing complex geopolitical risks while building and maintaining strong broker and client relationships.
The role includes responsibility for:
- Implement comprehensive underwriting strategy for PVT portfolio aligned with TMK risk appetite
- Set annual portfolio targets for premium income, profitability, and growth
- Establish underwriting guidelines, pricing models, and risk selection criteria
- Monitor global political developments and assess implications for portfolio exposure
- Manage product development initiatives to address emerging market needs
- Oversee portfolio composition ensuring appropriate risk diversification across geographies, industries, and coverage types
- Manage aggregate exposures and catastrophe accumulations within authorised limits
- Collaborate with actuarial team on pricing adequacy and reserve setting
- Ensure compliance with reinsurance treaties and facultative placement strategies
- Provide technical guidance on difficult submissions including war, terrorism, political violence, and related perils
- Develop and maintain underwriting tools, models, and rating methodologies
- Ensure consistent application of underwriting standards across the team
- Champion continuous improvement in underwriting processes and systems
- Work with legal and compliance on regulatory requirements and policy wordings
- Flexibility for occasional international travel to assess exposures or meet with global clients
- Support the career development of my team through appropriate coaching/mentoring/succession planning to lead, grow and develop a high-performing underwriting culture and team.
Ideally, the successful candidate will hold a professional insurance designation such as ACII or equivalent and will also have significant insurance industry Underwriting experience at a senior level. A strong understanding of the global geopolitical landscape is essential, as is expertise in catastrophe modelling and accumulation management. We are looking for someone that is analytical and commercial, who has a proven ability to lead and also has a track record of strategic thinking.
