We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced insurance professional to join our Marine & Energy team in London. The ideal candidate will have experience in the insurance industry, preferably within Marine and Energy classes, and will be responsible for portfolio underwriting of Markel’s fast-follow insurance products. This role requires a strong understanding of the London insurance market, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to oversee procedures within and outside the organization.

The Marine and Energy Division is part of a Wholesale group offering services for various specialty lines such as Equine and Livestock, Marine and Energy Liability, Trade Credit, Political Risk, and Surety (TCPRS). Our underwriting teams are known for their expertise in underwriting complex risks and delivering exceptional service. The Energy team focuses on underwriting a wide range of energy risks, including upstream, midstream & downstream energy, Power & Sustainable Energy and Marine liabilities, whilst the Marine short tail team specialises in cargo, specie, hull and war lines. Our team of experienced underwriters is dedicated to providing comprehensive coverage and exceptional service to our clients. What you’ll be doing:
- Underwrite Markel’s Fast-Follow marine and energy portfolios, ensuring long term profitability and growth
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders internally and with broker counterparts externally
- Conduct thorough and regular whole-account assessments and make informed underwriting decisions steering the portfolio towards constant profitability.
- Collaborate with other underwriters and team members to achieve business objectives efficiently.
- Monitor aggregates, including catastrophe management, within corporate thresholds and maximum capacities.
- Maintaining accurate capture of aggregation, risk and technically rated premium data on the company systems.
- Portfolio Analysis using various software and data analysis systems & reporting on portfolio performance as required
- Prioritise customer experience with best-in-class response times to all stakeholders
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Work within the efficient and effective workflow procedures within the portfolio
Key Skills:
- Experience in the insurance industry, preferably within the marine and energy market.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrate being an active member of a team and contribute in an open environment with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and PowerBI portfolio analysis tools
- Experience with Cat / Aggregation Management software would be an advantage.
- An ACII qualification, or being in the process of obtaining it, would be beneficial.
