This Officer position provides strategic leadership for the Miscellaneous Professional Liability (MPL) segment, with a focus on underwriting excellence, profitable growth, and innovation. The position is accountable for aligning segment strategy with broader enterprise goals, driving expansion of MPL offerings, as well as overseeing the Cyber/E&O Underwriting Center including direct management of the underwriting service center team. Key priorities include optimizing distribution through digital and light-touch channels, refining underwriting practices, and enhancing portfolio performance. The Officer also plays a critical role in evolving MPL and Small Business products to meet market demands, positioning the company for sustained success.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
1. Implements strategic objectives, underwriting strategies and best practices with substantial impact on the short-term success of an industry segment.
2. Ensures the achievement of continued profitability, growth and/or operational efficiencies for an industry segment through assessment of risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging risk issues.
3. Evaluates underwriting performance based on financial analysis. Includes rate, reserve adequacy, operational, planning and product reviews. Provides results to members of the underwriting management team, develops plans to resolve issues.
4. Collaborates with IT and Operations to generate small business premium growth through our Service Center, including digital growth opportunities.
5. Collaborates with the underwriting management team to identify new distribution partners, targeted classes of business, and cross sell opportunities.
6. Drives adherence to underwriting authority delegation, audit criteria and catastrophe management for an industry segment.
7. Collaborates with business partners in Risk Control, Actuarial, Claim, Operations and Compliance to address governance and compliance issues related to underwriting practices.
8. Provides guidance and direction in the development of underwriting and training tools.
9. May take lead responsibility for the development of underwriting strategies and position papers for emerging issues when assigned.
10. May maintain relationships with branches, brokers, agents and customers to assess risk tolerance, market appetite and emerging issues.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. In-depth technical knowledge of underwriting theories and practices within the insurance field.
2. Ability to effectively interact and communicate with all levels of external and/or internal business partners within scope of responsibility, team and/or matrix environment.
3. Leadership and management skills, demonstrating integrity and professionalism.
4. Ability to drive results by identifying, and resolving problems within scope of responsibility.
5. Knowledge of the insurance industry, its products and services.
6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree with Master’s preferred in a related discipline, or equivalent.
2. Typically, a minimum of 10 years of related work experience, with five years management experience.
In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia,California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $152,000 to $242,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
