Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to join its Berxi team in Boston. In this pivotal leadership role, you will shape the strategic evolution of Berxi’s direct-to-customer Digital Platform by guiding multiple engineering teams and Principal Engineers in the design and delivery of scalable, cloud-native solutions that support the needs of a fast-growing insurance business. Rather than being hands-on in coding, you will focus on engineering execution, technical leadership, and organizational enablement—setting vision, aligning priorities, and ensuring teams have the resources and clarity to succeed. Partnering closely with Product, Architecture, Program Management, and Customer Experience, you will drive collaboration across disciplines to deliver secure, reliable, and intuitive customer experiences. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, Agile environment, demonstrates strong leadership and strategic thinking, and values empowering technical leaders, fostering innovation, and building high-performing teams that deliver meaningful business outcomes.

- Serves as the direct manager of five engineers, including Principal and Senior Engineers. Accountable for their capacity planning, career development, growth strategy, performance management, and ongoing coaching.
- Lead, coach, and mentor multiple engineering teams, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning
- Empower Tech Leads by minimizing administrative overhead and supporting cross-team dependencies and external partnerships.
- Partner with Product, Program, and Business stakeholders to translate requirements into actionable engineering plans.
- Champion Agile best practices, driving accountability, removing blockers, and promoting a high-performance environment.
- Support career development and growth for engineers through regular feedback, coaching, and development opportunities.
- Ensure teams adhere to enterprise architecture principles, cybersecurity protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee the software development lifecycle, emphasizing test-driven development, secure coding, and maintainability.
- Promote adoption of modern frameworks, tools, and practices that enhance development velocity and operational resilience.
- Communicate technical strategies and architectural decisions to leadership and stakeholders.
- Proactively identify and resolve team and system bottlenecks, driving continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop and maintain documentation for team processes, workflows, and operational procedures.
- Foster an inclusive, empowered engineering environment where every teammate can contribute and be recognized.
- Work closely with Berxi’s Head of Architecture in system design, solutioning, observability, monitoring, and Developer Experience (DevEx) initiatives, leveraging platform and enablement team opportunities.
- Stand up and support a 24x7 production support team dedicated to observability and monitoring, ensuring robust support for customer-facing applications.
- Ensure production support processes are tightly integrated with engineering and platform teams for rapid issue resolution and continuous improvement.
- Focus on engineering execution and technical leadership, while Program Management drives risk mitigation, project scope, time, and cost management.
- Partner with Scrum Masters (who report to Program Managers) to support Sprint ceremonies, retrospectives, velocity tracking, and Sprint updates, ensuring engineering teams are set up for success.
Qualifications, Skills, And Experience
- 12+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
- Proven track record of managing multiple engineering teams and delivering enterprise-grade, cloud-native solutions.
- Experience mentoring, coaching, and developing engineers and Tech Leads.
- Strong understanding of Agile methodologies, Sprint planning, and team dynamics.
