Position Summary
Freberg Environmental Insurance (FEI), a Managing General Underwriter within Ryan Specialty, is a market‑leading provider of environmental and pollution‑related insurance solutions. With decades of specialized expertise and a broker‑focused model, we deliver customized underwriting solutions for environmental contractors, consultants, engineers, and a wide range of environmentally impacted industries.
We are seeking a motivated, detail‑oriented Environmental Underwriter to join our Environmental Engineers, Consultants & Contractors (ECC) Program—FEI’s largest and longest-running underwriting platform. This role focuses on underwriting new and renewal accounts across multiple environmental lines, including General Liability, Professional Liability, and Contractors Pollution Liability. The ideal candidate is comfortable managing a high-volume book with disciplined underwriting and strong broker communication.
What will your job entail?
- Underwrite and manage a portfolio of new and renewal business across environmental lines (GL, PL, CPL) for accounts of moderate to high complexity.
- Evaluate risk quality, pricing adequacy, terms, and coverage structure to ensure profitable underwriting decisions within delegated authority.
- Build and maintain a consistent, disciplined underwriting approach aligned with FEI guidelines, rating models, and carrier expectations.
- Collaborate with brokers to communicate risk appetites, coverage options, program value, and deal structure.
- Support growth by identifying opportunities within existing and new markets and contributing to FEI’s portfolio strategy.
- Apply consultative selling and marketing skills to promote environmental products and solutions.
- Participate in broker meetings, marketing visits, industry events, and training sessions.
- Deliver a strong service experience through timely, accurate underwriting and responsive communication.
- Maintain strong broker relationships to drive renewal retention and new business development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Risk Management, Business, Environmental Science, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
- 5+ years of underwriting experience—preferably environmental liability, casualty, or specialty lines.
- Experience underwriting environmental contractors, engineers, consultants, or similar risks is highly preferred.
- Strong technical underwriting skills and comfort managing a high-volume, fast-moving book of business.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship‑building skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid P&C or Surplus Lines license (as required by jurisdiction).
- Professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, ARE, or similar are a plus.

The target salary range for this position is $88,000.00 - $110,000.00 annually.
The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
