This .NET Software Engineer role supports a Markel policy administration system, a core platform for our large commercial Wholesale and Specialty business. The engineer will contribute to feature development, platform enhancements, and ongoing modernization initiatives while partnering with product and operations teams to deliver reliable, scalable solutions.
We are seeking a .NET Software Engineer to support and enhance one of Markel's policy administration systems, a mission-critical platform used across our Wholesale and Specialty lines of business. This role focuses on building, maintaining, and improving backend services and user-facing components that enable underwriting and policy processing. You will work closely with product, QA, and operations partners to deliver reliable, high-quality solutions in an Agile delivery environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain .NET applications and services supporting the underwriting platform
Implement enhancements, bug fixes, and performance improvements across existing systems
Collaborate with Product Owners, Business Analysts, QA, and Operations to deliver well-tested solutions
Participate in code reviews to ensure quality, consistency, and maintainability
Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, contributing to root cause analysis and long-term fixes
Support integration points with downstream systems and services
Contribute to ongoing platform modernization, technical debt reduction, and improved automation
Follow established SDLC, security, and compliance standards
Required Qualifications
Strong experience developing applications using C# and .NET (.NET Core or .NET Framework)
Experience building and supporting web applications and APIs
Required - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, other related field or equivalent work experience, including military experience
3 -5 years of experience
Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL
Familiarity with source control, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile development practices
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Angular or other modern frontend frameworks
Experience supporting large, enterprise-scale applications
Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
Experience in insurance, financial services, or other regulated environments
Familiarity with automated testing practices and performance tuning
