Job Description
The successful candidate will support underwriting teams by delivering comprehensive risk assessments for both current and prospective accounts. They will manage the risk portfolio and provide account-level engineering expertise to meet underwriting requirements. Leveraging industry knowledge, strong analytical capabilities, well ‑ established relationships, and exceptional communication and organizational skills, the Director, Risk Engineering will oversee the evaluation of exposures and the development of Loss Scenarios for Energy related Property and Construction risks.
The successful candidate will also be responsible for operating within the assigned budget and five ‑ year plan, including coordinating inspections worldwide and managing third ‑ party service providers.
What To Expect
- Plan, organize, and perform desk-based risk assessments and onsite risk services/engineering surveys for existing and prospective clients, as required by Underwriters.
- Accountable for completing surveys, following up on key recommendations, and ensuring that risk control/engineering information on file is up to date.
- Provide technical input on claims, including the review of claims reports and site visits to identify areas for claims mitigation and recommendations for improvement.
- Support Underwriters in Marketing and Client meetings, providing insights and support.
- Liaise with clients and their insurers to establish mutual beneficial objectives and provide alternative risk control solutions. Attend Road shows and client meetings across Canada.
- Follow, promote, and facilitate the adoption of the continuous risk improvement methodology. Promote employee development through effective planning, coaching, mentoring, training, and cross-training facilitation. Foster internal talent that results in greater diversification of staff.
- Additional responsibilities include participation in industry events and conducting peer reviews.
What You Bring
- A minimum of 10 years experience with property risk control consulting in the energy segment (Oil & Gas, Power Gen, Mining & Chemical) is preferred, experience in Engineering Operations in those segments will be considered.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; Professional designations (Professional Engineer, Certified Engineering Technologist) are preferred. Additional certifications such as Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Canadian Risk Management, Project Management Professional are an asset.
- Knowledge and experience with Industry-specific standards such as National Fire Protection Association, American Petroleum Institute, FM Global, American Society of Mechanical Engineersand other related loss prevention standards and codes.
- Demonstrates a strong work ethic with attention to detail, commitment to quality, and effective time management.
- Proven ability to manage internal and external stakeholders professionally, fostering accountability for results while adapting to change and new systems.
- A strong understanding of the specialty property and energy marketplace. In-depth knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, insurance and underwriting processes, legal and regulatory requirements, and emerging risk service trends in the specialty commercial marketplace.
High degree of proficiency with English required to service customers, both internal to the company and external, across Canada.
Salary Range: $159,300 - $209,300
