The primary purpose of this position is to evaluate the kind and degree of risks involved in insuring a particular asset on both new and renewal business and to use that information to accept, price, modify or reject business within delegated authority level.
Markel Personal Lines is currently recruiting for an experienced Underwriter for our marine product lines. This includes underwriting responsibilities for Markel Boat, High Performance, Helmsman and Tradesman products.
Responsibilities:
- Produces and underwrites business from contracted agents/brokers
- Continuously manages book of business (maintains quality of business)
- Direct responsibility for agency development and management, including agency visits
- Accountable for accurate underwriting documentation/information in account management systems and adherence to documentation standards
- Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions
- Understands and executes strategies to produce budgeted results
- Works to achieve budgeted financial results (premium, loss ratio, retention, commissions, pricing, new business and expense management) through superior service, renewal retention and responsiveness to new business submissions
- Considers different approaches towards risks to maximize profitability (e.g., pricing, endorsements, limits)
- Participates on projects having an impact on the business
- Identifies and captures new business opportunities and effectively cross sells
- Able to create tactical sales plans; track results and execute necessary corrective action
Desired Background:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Incumbent should have completed at least 2 - 5 years in a marine underwriting capacity
- Qualified candidate has demonstrated a solid understanding of assigned product line(s)
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to grasp concepts quickly
- Effectively articulates features/benefits of Markel programs, products & services
- Consummate team player
- Able to grow book of business while maintaining acceptable loss ratios
