The Financial Reporting and Accounting Senior Analyst is an integral part of the Markel Group Finance team, serving as a key member of the accounting and reporting team. The Senior Analyst plays a crucial role in the completion of Markel Group’s external SEC filings (10-Ks, 10-Q, 8-Ks, and 11-Ks), as well as the accounting and reporting processes that support the financial close, management reporting, and external disclosures.
Job Responsibilities:
- Prepare and support the timely filing of Forms 10‑K, 10‑Q, 8‑K, and 11-K disclosures, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP, SEC regulations, and internal disclosure controls;
- Draft, update, and maintain financial statement footnotes, coordinating inputs across various supporting teams;
- Assist with the preparation of MD&A, including supporting schedules and analyses, ensuring clarity and consistency with internal management reporting;
- Collaborate with other accounting, finance, and legal teams within Markel Group, as well as across our family of businesses, to complete periodic financial close processes supporting management review and external disclosures;
- Support quarterly reviews and annual audits by preparing deliverable requests, responding to external auditor inquiries, and facilitating review of SEC filings;
- Perform XBRL tagging and validation for SEC filings, including resolution of tagging errors and validation comments;
- Conduct disclosure benchmarking research against peer companies to support enhancements to financial statement footnotes and MD&A disclosures;
- Perform technical accounting research on complex or judgmental areas and prepare supporting analyses or memos, as needed;
- Monitor new accounting standard updates and SEC disclosure requirements and assist in evaluating their impact on financial reporting;
- Assist with holding company accounting processes, including those related to debt, restricted stock, equity, and alternative investments;
- Support trial balance maintenance for corporate holding company entities, including journal entries, intercompany activity, and period‑end adjustments;
- Prepare and analyze financial schedules that support the quarterly close process, including holding company and consolidated‑level reporting;
- Assist with internal management reporting packages and presentation materials, ensuring alignment between internal financial results and external reporting;
- Aggregate and analyze segment‑level and business‑level financial information for use in consolidated reporting and SEC disclosures;
- Collaborate with Investor Relations to ensure external financial presentations and messaging are consistent with SEC filings and U.S. GAAP results, including reconciliation support and disclosure tie‑outs;
- Partner with Legal, Treasury, and FP&A to ensure accurate and consistent financial disclosures across reports and reporting periods;
- Support SOX and disclosure controls related to SEC reporting processes;
- Assist legal department in the preparation of registration statements for debt and equity offerings by providing or reviewing any financial disclosures and reviewing content for consistency with other SEC filings;
- Collaborate with teammates and initiate ideas to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and effectiveness; and
- Participate in other strategic accounting and business projects as they arise for the purpose of achieving functional goals and objectives.
Work Experience:
- 2+ years of public accounting experience
- SEC reporting experience preferred
Skill Set:
- High degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change in a fast-paced environment
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work successfully both in teams and independently
- Experience with Workiva preferred
- Experience with Oracle applications preferred
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting required
Certification:
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required
