Sompo has a unique opportunity for an Assistant Vice President - Underwriter on our Retail Primary Casualty Underwriting team.
Sompo North America provides a client-centric service approach by offering comprehensive multi-line capabilities. Taking a holistic approach to risk management, the unit offers general liability, commercial auto, and workers' compensation lines of business through a diverse range of program structures including guaranteed cost, SIRs, deductibles, captives, and more. The unit focus on large accounts across a wide range of industry practices in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada including manufacturing, real estate, hospitality, financial institutions, professional services, life sciences, technology, retail, and Asian-interest accounts. Additionally, engaging in cross-functional collaboration with our property, umbrella/excess, and environmental business units is integral to our organizational identity and success.

What you’ll be doing:
Manage and grow a complex Primary Casualty portfolio, underwriting business to achieve profitability and align with risk appetite and overall Sompo guidelines and business strategy
Exercise underwriting authority to structure, price, and negotiate Primary Casualty programs, including limits, terms, and conditions across diverse risks and industries
Leverage expertise in Commercial Casualty lines, including General Liability, Workers Compensation, and Auto, to develop and underwrite customized solutions for clients
Utilize advanced pricing models for program structures such as guaranteed cost, large deductibles, SIRs, and captives to create customized casualty solutions
Lead underwriting decisions in assigned market across key industries such as Real Estate, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Life Sciences, Technology, Retail, and Professional Services
Conduct strategic account reviews and provide detailed, comprehensive file documentation for large Primary Casualty programs
Evaluate and provide recommendations on adverse underwriting decisions, rate actions, coverage requirements, and declinations to ensure portfolio profitability
Monitor market conditions, competitive trends, and regulatory developments to inform underwriting strategy and portfolio management
What you’ll bring:
7+ years of Commercial Casualty underwriting experience including General Liability, Workers Compensation and Auto
Proven ability to underwrite, price, and negotiate complex accounts across a range of sizes, industries, and exposures
Strong relationship management and communication skills with experience partnering effectively with brokers, insureds, and internal teams
Collaborative working environment with strong oral and written communication skills
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Salary Range: $120,000-$195,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
