About Amwins Special Risk Underwriters
Special Risk Underwriters (SRU) is a specialty property managing general agency (MGA) operating within Amwins, one of the largest wholesale insurance distributors in the United States. Focused exclusively on the Excess & Surplus (E&S) property market, SRU underwrites approximately $650 million in premium across a diversified portfolio of property product lines. We serve as the underwriting engine for Amwins' broker network, partnering exclusively with Amwins wholesale brokers to deliver creative, responsive solutions for complex and hard-to-place property risks.

The Opportunity
The Associate Underwriter role is an entry-level position designed for motivated, analytically minded individuals who are eager to build a career in specialty property insurance. Through SRU's structured
4-Year Underwriter Development Program, associates gain technical knowledge, market exposure, and professional skills needed to grow into independent underwriting roles.
This is a highly hands-on opportunity. From day one, you will work alongside experienced underwriters, engage directly with our broker partners, and develop a deep understanding of E&S property risks across a broad range of property types and coverage structures.
SRU 4-Year Underwriter Development Program
SRU's development program is purpose-built to produce skilled, confident E&S property underwriters. Program elements include:
- Six multi-day, in-person training sessions held throughout the program covering underwriting fundamentals, property risk analysis, coverage terms and conditions, pricing methodology, market dynamics, and professional development
- Dedicated underwriter and mentor assignment providing day-to-day guidance, technical coaching, and career sponsorship
- Job shadowing with senior underwriters across accounts, broker interactions, and renewal negotiations to build real-world underwriting judgment
- Rotational assignments across SRU's product lines to develop broad exposure to the full scope of our E&S property portfolio
- Ongoing performance feedback, goal-setting, and a structured path toward independent underwriting authority
Responsibilities
- Assist underwriters in the analysis, pricing, and quoting of new and renewal E&S property submissions
- Review and summarize underwriting information including applications, loss histories, inspection reports, and property schedules
- Communicate with Amwins brokers on submission status, coverage questions, and policy details under the direction of a senior underwriter
- Participate in all components of the 4-Year Development Program, including training sessions, rotations, and mentorship activities
- Support policy issuance, endorsement processing, and documentation within underwriting systems
- Develop working knowledge of SRU's product appetite, coverage forms, and underwriting guidelines
- Contribute to team projects, process improvements, and underwriting research as needed
Qualifications
- Required
- Bachelor's degree in Risk Management & Insurance, Finance, Business, or a related field
- Strong analytical and quantitative aptitude with attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Eagerness to learn, grow, and build a career in specialty insurance
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Preferred
- Internship or coursework in insurance, finance, or risk management
- Familiarity with property insurance concepts or the E&S market
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other analytical tools
