Position Summary
The Underwriter – Lawyer Professional Liability is responsible for supporting the underwriting of Professional Liability risks for law firms by ensuring the accuracy of policy data, assisting in risk evaluation and facilitating both renewal and new business processes. This role partners closely with brokers and clients to gather critical information, assess legal risk exposures and ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines. The Underwriter plays a key role in documentation, pricing support and delivering high-quality service while developing deeper expertise in Lawyers Professional Liability insurance.

Key Responsibilities
- Policy & Renewal Management
- Evaluate and maintain existing Lawyer Professional Liability policies to ensure data is current, accurate and appropriately priced for renewal.
- Preparation of renewal strategies, underwriting summaries and policy updates.
- Client & Broker Communication
- Serve as a primary point of contact for brokers to gather underwriting information (e.g., firm size, areas of practice, claims history).
- Respond to inquiries regarding coverage, underwriting appetite and submission requirements specific to LPL.
- Submission & Documentation
- Prepare, review and organize underwriting submissions including applications, loss runs, and supporting legal risk documentation.
- Ensure underwriting files meet internal standards, audit requirements and regulatory guidelines.
- Risk Assessment
- Conduct thorough assessments of law firm risks, including practice areas, jurisdictions and prior claims experience.
- Identify key exposures such as conflicts of interest, high-risk specialties or emerging legal trends.
- Pricing & Coverage Support
- Prepare premium calculations using LPL underwriting guidelines and rating tools.
- Analyze coverage terms including limits, retentions, endorsements and exclusions.
- Reporting & Analytics
- Maintain accurate underwriting data and generate reports on portfolio performance, renewals and key metrics.
- Track and analyze book of business performance, including retention and loss ratio trends.
- Compliance & Audit
- Ensure adherence to company underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements and surplus lines compliance where applicable.
- Support internal and external audit processes by providing complete and accurate documentation.
- Team Collaboration
- Collaborate with underwriting team to evaluate risks, prioritize workflow and support underwriting decisions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including claims, actuarial and legal.
- Customer Service Excellence
- Deliver a high level of service by addressing inquiries promptly, resolving issues and building strong broker relationships.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- 2+ years of underwriting experience in Professional Liability or Financial Lines experience.
- Exposure to Lawyer Professional Liability (LPL) or similar E&O lines is preferred.
Licenses & Certifications
- State Property & Casualty license (or ability to obtain within a designated timeframe).
- RPLU designation or progress toward completion is a plus.

The target salary range for this position is $85,855.00 - $85,855.00 annually.
The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
