The opportunity:
Provide strategic leadership and enterprise accountability for reinsurancepost placement,includingoperations,accountingand reporting. Act as a trusted advisor to Finance,Actuarial,Underwriting and Executive stakeholders, ensuring reinsurance strategy is translated into robust financial outcomes, stronggovernanceand scalable processes.
Serve as deputy to the Senior Director, with clear accountability for reinsurance performance,thecontrol environment and transformation delivery.
What you’ll be doing:
Act as a senior leader within Finance, shaping and executing the reinsurance operating model in line with enterprise strategy and risk appetite.Deputisefor the Senior Director on all reinsurance matters,representingthe function atExCo, Board and external forums asrequired.
Lead the design and delivery of strategic transformationinitiatives, including ceded reinsurance system implementation and architecturalimprovementsacross finance.
Own the integrity,completenessand timeliness of reinsurance financial results within the general ledger.Provide insightful,decision‑gradeanalysis on financial performance, including drivers of volatility, retention optimisation, reinsurer exposure, creditriskandbad debt.
Act as a strategic partnertoFinance, Actuarial and Capital teams,contributingto financial planning, capitalmanagementand performance management throughhigh‑qualityreinsurance insight and challenge.Ensure alignment of reinsurance reporting with regulatory and internal management requirements.
Establish and continuously enhance a robust reinsurance control framework, ensuring key risks areidentified,assessedand mitigated.Own andmaintainreinsurance policies, standards and procedures, driving consistency and governance.
Provide inspirational leadership to the reinsurance team,promotingahigh‑performing, inclusive and accountable culture.Set clear expectations, drive performanceoutcomesand develop capability aligned to future business needs.Coach and mentorto developtechnical specialists, building a resilient and scalable team.Champion continuous improvement, innovation and learning across the function.
Develop andmaintaininfluentialinternal and external relationships,engagingwith auditors,brokersand reinsurers as a credible senior representative of Markel.
Our must-haves:
Demonstrate deep, practical reinsuranceexpertise,witha proven ability to interpret contract languageand assess the applicability of coverage.
Exhibit the capabilityto manage and resolve complex reinsurance claims through effective engagement and negotiation with reinsurers, applying sound technical judgement and commercial acumen.Experience managingreinsurancedisputeswould bebeneficial,butis not essential.
Havea track recordof driving process,systemsand operating model improvements at scale.Experiencewith system and process transformation wouldprovevaluable.Knowledge ofEclipse,Phinsysand Oracle would beadvantageousand aptitude to learn in-house software iscrucial.
Displayastrategicmindsetwiththe abilityto setcleardirection,definemeaningfulobjectivesandprioritise effectively, coordinating resources to maximise utilisation.Proven experience leadingdiverseteamswithstrongownership of outcomes, particularlyin relation tofinancial integrity, control and deliveryis essential.
Be delivery oriented and motivated to succeed, with ademonstrableaptitudetooperatein a complex, evolving environment,withresilience and adaptability.
Displayexceptional communication and presentation skills, with credibility at executive level:exhibitstrong judgement and willingness to challenge constructively to achieveoptimalresults.
Possess strong analyticalcapabilitywith structured,evidence‑baseddecision making;strong execution capability with a focus on measurable outcomes and delivery to commitments is imperative.
Exhibit a strongunderstandingof Excel and be aproficientuser of MSOffice. Havingfoundationalknowledgeof AI anddata‑driventools, with the ability to apply these to improve processes, enhance insight and drive operational efficiencyis a necessity.
