The Catastrophe Management function at Markel International is a highly collaborative team which oversees a wide variety of insurance products. We pride ourselves on our high-quality service in a fast-paced environment. Catastrophe Management sits in Portfolio analytics, which is different to the traditional market. The portfolio analytics team is a highly regarded team at Markel, which also oversees pricing models and portfolio management. This department allows Catastrophe Management to have access to the business through a unique lens and opens the door to skills outside a traditional team such as Python coding and PowerBI builds.

At Markel International, our Catastrophe Management team is an empowered and autonomous team, providing critical support across a diverse range of classes including Marine, Energy, Political Violence, Accident and Health, Casualty, and Cyber.

- Pre-Underwriting Analytics: Dive deep into data to uncover insights that drive smart underwriting decisions.
- Class and Entity Level Reporting: Deliver detailed and impactful reports that inform our strategies and actions.

The role may be required to work over a number of lines of business but will be focused on supporting the Non-Natural Catastrophe team.
Part of Markel Group (NYSE – MKL) a Fortune 500 company with over 60 offices in 20+ countries, is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory, and investment operations around the world.
What you’ll be doing:
- Use third party catastrophe models and in-house tools for pre-underwriting analysis
- Lead production of quarterly divisional reports
- Build and maintain a strong relationship with divisional underwriters
- Be involved in model validation and exploring new opportunities with third party vendors
- Provide ad hoc reports for underwriting portfolio analysis and reporting for senior executives
- Present results and ideas confidently to senior stakeholders and underwriting teams
- Collaborate closely with colleagues in other Markel offices
- Liaise closely with outsourcing partners
- Lead on ad-hoc projects with assistance from the Catastrophe Manager
- Assist on internal and external reporting including to Lloyds and the PRA
- Involvement in process and reporting automation
Key Skills:
- Proven catastrophe modelling or aggregation management experience in the London market
- Excellent IT skills with good knowledge of SQL. Those with other coding experience are encouraged to apply.
- Proven experience with catastrophe management best practices
- Proven experience of portfolio level aggregation techniques
- Experience of building and maintaining successful relationships with internal and external contacts
- The ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
- Completed a numerical degree with a classification of 2:1 or above, or equivalent
