The Role
The AVP, Protection, Pricing, Europe is one of the leaders of Pacific Life Re’s Protection line of business in Europe. The incumbent will play a crucial role in executing Pacific Life Re’s Protection strategy, responsible for the technical management of Europe Pricing function across tender activity including experience analysis, basis setting, and pipeline & resource management, alongside directly supporting our clients in identifying and implementing novel solutions to challenges they face.
Reporting directly to the VP, Protection, Pricing, Europe this role will provide direction, challenge and support to the team to ensure we win and maintain profitable business. Additionally, the AVP will be central to maintaining pricing excellence, embedding superior data sources as a competitive advantage, and ensuring the highest standards in risk assessment and financial modelling. In managing the team they will serve as a mentor and leader, supporting talent development and fostering a positive environment where people are supported and challenged.
Key Responsibilities
Responsible for the timely and accurate delivery of pricing terms to clients for both in force and new business opportunities, ensuring high technical standards of experience analyses and the production of high-quality pricing papers, the successful candidate:
- Develops and motivates top talent, supporting the building of an engaged, empowered, and market-leading team.
- Champions, role models and encourages a culture in line with our PL Re principles and behaviours.
- Delivers Pricing reinsurance terms, with strong leadership skills and resource management. Ensures work is performed effectively including a focus on pragmatism.
- Leads robust challenge to assumptions, processes, and strategy within Pricing and around the Company ensuring that everyone has a voice and discussions are organized to reach consensus.
- Develops and maintains relationships with key client contacts to ensure PL Re is viewed as a knowledgeable, respected, and collaborative reinsurance partner. Owns client pricing relationships (alongside the VP where relevant).
- Takes the lead in developing innovative solutions and structures that address our clients’ “jobs to be done” (including collaboration with other teams as needed).
- Supports the VP in developing and delivering the Pricing strategy, with a focus on utilisation of superior data and insights to achieve this.
- Leads in the identification and utilisation of competitive advantages to better understand risks and generate value.
- Cultivates a healthy risk culture within the function, acting as a subject matter expert for the Pricing function, the markets that the business operates in, and the risks to which it is exposed.
Qualifications & Expertise
- 5+ years post-qualified experience in life (re)insurance pricing in a market facing role(s) in (re)insurance with a strong background in the UK and Irish Protection markets.
- Skilled influencer/communicator with demonstrable confidence, maturity and gravitas in a wide range of settings, including with senior stakeholders internally and externally.
- Highly commercial and able to negotiate with skill in challenging situations whilst maintaining the integrity of working relationships.
- Desire and ability to proactively develop strong external relationships with clients and the wider market.
- Demonstrable track record of effective leadership and people management, motivation and development.
- Ability to make high-quality and well-balanced decisions in the face of ambiguity, exercising sound judgement alongside technical and analytical insight.
- Excellent understanding of actuarial principles and processes; strong knowledge of PL Re risks and market landscape.
