The role:
- To underwrite Financial Lines business and develop lead market capabilities in accordance with underwriting guidelines and business plan.
- To externally promote HDI to broking houses, creating a network of supporting brokers providing client opportunities within appetite and also respond and develop new opportunities as they are presented.
- To consider opportunities to innovate with trusted broker partners and when identified build the business case for sponsorship.
- To develop the branch capabilities to write profitable Financial Lines business.
Key accountabilities:
Underwriting
- Work collaboratively on developing and maintain pricing tools for the FI lines of business
- Underwrite within guidelines and strategy to execute the development of a balanced portfolio
- Monitor and report back on the balance of the portfolio and any deviation from plan
- Maintain and interpret management information, provide suggestions on any strategic changes and identification of trends that may affect adversely or positively the account
- Assist Head of Financial Lines with strategy, planning and forecasting for the Commercial D&O portfolio
Relationship Management
- Promote HDI externally to enhance brand reputation and become a recognised lead market in this sector
- Develop a trusted broker network to provide business opportunities, establish HDI as a viable primary lead and excess alternative market for D&O (and ancillary lines) business and promote HDI externally to clients
- Internally create a network that can support the enhanced D&O mandate, working with legal, compliance, actuarial and claims to provide the necessary support for these product lines
Process Improvement
- Identify and enhance the quality and value of processes for your area of work
Project Management
- End to end project management for functional projects and contribute to any Branch wide projects
Leadership
- Establish themselves as the product specialist for D&O especially, mentor and train more junior or non-product specific underwriters about the coverage, risk selection and market
- Identify skills gaps and training requirements of the team.
- Provide the people across the team with the opportunities, training and experience to expand their knowledge and improve their skills
Risks and Controls
- Design, implement and maintain process controls to ensure the quality of the output for your area within the function
- Ensure documentation of the processes and output is accurate, up-to-date and accessible
Skills & experience:
- Recognised market leader in Financial Lines business, with a detailed understanding of the product and market within Financial Lines
- Understanding of the inputs required to create technical pricing and able to contribute to the development and refinement of underwriting tools
- Established connections within the Financial Lines market to access the desired business partners and the identified client base
- Experience in writing to a balanced portfolio and deep understanding of line size management and risk selection
- Strong team ethic and self-motivating character
- Desire to aid the development of more junior members of the team and demonstrate best practice
- Calm and considered judgement even during peak trading periods
