Job Description
The Role
Two graduates are sought to support the delivery of investment content, accounting and reporting for the Canopius Group. This is an excellent entry level role for individuals keen to get an introduction to a career in the financial services industry. While this is a full time role, it is envisaged that the positions will initially consist of two 12 month rotations.
One rotation will be in the Investment team and its management of the Canopius investment portfolio (currently $5.0bn AUM but expected to grow in line with management plan over coming years). This is a front-office investment role and will overlap with many aspects of the management of the outsourced investment infrastructure, including; the development of an appropriate investment risk appetite, investment strategy and asset allocation, the efficient combination of outsourced investment managers and the development of tactical positioning, including using derivative based futures and option strategies
The other rotation will have a middle and back-office focus working within Group Finance, primarily responsible for supporting the Investment Management team and other senior management. It will include elements of accurate investment accounting and the timely production of high-quality management reporting as well as contributing to the Group’s statutory and regulatory reporting requirements. This rotation provides opportunity to broaden technical skills and knowledge as well as a professional network by working with other finance teams in London, Singapore, Chicago and Bermuda as well as outsourced providers based in the US, Scotland and India.
The role requires a desire to develop investment knowledge, accounting practice, good quantitative modelling skills, operational competence and an experience of working to tight deadlines. Once an area of specialism has been identified, financial and study support in achieving professional qualifications will be provided.
Responsibilities
Rotation 1
- Provide support during the Group Investment Committee and Board(s) meeting cycle;
- Contribute to the development of the investment income target and strategic investment recommendations made to the Group Investment Committee so as to achieve the investment risk and return objectives of the Board(s);
- Generate expected risk and return numbers on an ongoing basis, as well as to assess the performance and risk impact of the current and proposed investment strategies to maximise investment income for the Group;
- Support the monitoring of existing and new investment managers;
- Help ensure that all investment infrastructure is in place to enable the quick deployment of monies if required. Ongoing management of this infrastructure;
- Supporting research into new asset classes and investment managers.
- Contribute to discussions on tactical investment positioning and implementation
Rotation 2
- To assist with all aspects of the monthly investment close process which includes elements of accounting for and reporting on the Group’s investment portfolio, whilst maintaining the governance and control framework in place;
- Obtain all relevant investment valuation and transaction information from custodian banks, investment managers and administrators and ensure that the outsourced accounting provider has processed these correctly;
- Processing summarised transactions to the Group’s general ledger systems and preparing reconciliations and supporting schedules;
- Working closely with outsourced providers, the Investment team and other areas of Finance in order to resolve any issues or requests for information;
- Preparation of the monthly investment pack and other reporting as necessary;
- Involvement in the audit process.
Skills And Experience
- Educated to a degree level gained in an analytical discipline (minimum 2:1 or equivalent degree). Evidence of excellent numerical ability.
- Desire to pursue a professional qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CFA qualifications - full study support provided).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Highly motivated, enthusiastic and structured working style
- Strong attention to detail and focused on the delivery of high-quality work
- Intermediate/advanced MS Excel skills desirable; Python skills an advantage
