The primary purpose of this position is to act as a resource and serve as an integral member of the underwriting team able to overcome obstacles in the workload and meet timelines by fulfilling basic underwriting support responsibilities. This position will handle day-to- day client servicing including managing workflow and reinforcing the ease of doing business with Markel by meeting or exceeding agents/brokers expectations and providing quality service on a consistent basis.
We are seeking an Underwriting Support Specialist to join our Agriculture Division. The primary purpose of this position is to provide direct support to the underwriting team by handling essential underwriting tasks and maintaining strong communication with both customer and agent partners. The role focuses on day-to-day client servicing, managing workflow efficiently, and reinforcing the ease of doing business with Markel. By delivering consistent, high-quality service and collaborating closely with internal and external stakeholders, this team member will help ensure a seamless experience for our customers and agents. This associate works under direct supervision following standard processing procedures. We're looking for someone who is driven, energetic, detail-oriented, and resourceful—ready to contribute and adapt alongside a dynamic underwriting team.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as a liaison between underwriters, agents, and insureds by managing routine communications and follow-ups related to renewals, new business, and policy servicing.
Assist with gathering and reviewing new business submissions for completeness, requesting additional information as needed to support underwriting review.
Ensure accuracy of information input into all appropriate systems and verify that all necessary documentation is in the file.
Routinely communicate with team members and other key business partners to research and gather necessary information to review, analyze and complete transactions.
Utilize and adhere to internal guidelines, procedures and service standards to ensure that all assigned work/transactions are processed in a timely manner (yet accurately) and meet compliance standards.
Participate in problem solving activities to define problems, identify root causes, design and test solutions, implement solutions, and utilizes continuous improvement methodologies to improve processes & procedures in an effort to work more efficiently & effectively and permanently eliminate problems.
With Underwriter direction, attach appropriate forms and make policy changes as requested.
Deal with internal and external inquiries by email and telephone
Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned to assure efficient operation of the team, customer needs are met, and business results are achieved
Work Experience/Skill Sets
High School Diploma Required
3–5 years of relevant experience in underwriting support, casualty insurance, or a related field
Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills
Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently and within a team.
Ability to follow process and attention to details.
Ability to prioritize tasks effectively, work under deadlines, and adjust accordingly
Self-motivated with a positive attitude and willingness to learn
Horse knowledge/experience a plus, but not required
Adequate in Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel)
