The Delegated Underwriter for our Terrorism team will be responsible for maintaining and managing our profitable delegated book. This role involves close collaboration with both our London and international underwriters, as well as key stakeholders across Markel. Along with strengthening and growing new relationships with peers in similar roles at our key brokers is also essential.
Additionally, the role requires leveraging data insights to optimize portfolio performance. Effective risk management and profitable underwriting returns will be achieved through collaboration with various stakeholders across the business."

The Marine Division is based in London but has some limited representation in other key business locations. We accept risks in the areas of Hull, Cargo, War, Specie, Liability and Terrorism on a world-wide basis. We are leaders in a number of our chosen areas and require a commitment to technical expertise and accuracy to maintain this leadership role. A great emphasis is placed on the relationship between the insured and insurer with a focus on meeting clients and producers in their home territories. Business is written through both Markel Syndicate 3000 and Markel International Insurance Company Limited.

What you’ll be doing:
- Maintain War & Terrorism Product Line specific delegated underwriting policies and procedures and collaborate with management, claims, actuarial, delegated underwriting operation and product development to institute changes when appropriate
- Prepare and perform mid-year underwriting audits for all binders and lineslips where Markel lead
- Execute delegated product lines specific training for underwriters and support staff
- Coordinate with our coverholders & lineslip brokers, Markel’s delegated team, OCUO, Cat management team to maintain a good quality of data and exposure management within Markel
- Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control as per the Markel minimum UW standards for delegated business
- Act as advocate for Markel and the War and Terrorism product lines and communicate regularly within the global team
- Promote collaboration with throughout the Markel global network to advance line of business profit and growth goals
- Build strong relationships with brokers and their delegated teams to grow our leadership role in this space
- Help co-ordinate and deal with findings from the delegated audits and the underwriting audits
- Provide performance metrics for Head of Class and Director on delegated performance
Key Skills:
- Current experience war and terrorism underwriting expertise
- Have a detailed understanding of the Terrorism and Political Violence delegated business and standards within the insurance market
- Demonstrated expertise in delivering superior delegated underwriting results required
- Broad understanding of claims, actuarial, product development, regulatory and compliance functions;
- High energy, ability to deliver exceptional written and verbal presentations, pro-active self-starter, strong sense of urgency, flexible and spontaneous
- Proven ability in setting and meeting objectives and impact and influencing peers and subordinates to “buy in”
