The Catastrophe and Exposure Management Team delivers a comprehensive suite of analytical services that support informed underwriting decisions and robust risk management practices. The team’s mission is to enable Markel International to achieve consistent underwriting profitability and superior financial outcomes by providing high-quality, data-driven analytical support across the business.
You’ll collaborate closely with the rest of the International Portfolio Analytics team, who leverage cutting-edge advanced analytics, data management, business intelligence, and technical pricing implementation to guide the development of analytical infrastructure, focussed on optimising workflows and delivering best in class risk analytics.

The International Portfolio Analytics (IPA) team at Markel is a dynamic, multi-functional group that operates with creativity, autonomy, and empowerment. Embedded within the underwriting business and represented in senior leadership forums, the team supports all divisions of Markel International. Its core focus lies in the key areas essential to driving profitability and performance for a specialty lines insurer: Portfolio Management, Pricing Transformation, Advanced Analytics and Catastrophe & Exposure Management.

What you’ll be doing:
Technical Leadership and Development
- Drive the development of catastrophe and exposure management workflows and analytics that improve efficiency and deliver enhanced insights
- Lead projects to evaluate existing analytical methodologies, scope change and deliver enhancements, including robust technical documentation
- Support platform and model updates, workflow improvements, and solve technical issues
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Develop tools using a modern data stack with a focus on automation, modernisation, and the practical integration of AI tools where appropriate
- Stay informed on industry trends, emerging risks, and advancements in analytical capabilities
- Contribute to delivering best-in-class analytics that support Markel’s growth through more informed underwriting and risk management
Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
- Work closely with the Exposure Management leadership team to identify development priorities, and define and deliver development roadmap
- Enhance technical understanding within the team and foster a culture of collective development
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Key Skills:
- Advanced Coding Skills: Proficiency in SQL (including TSQL/Dynamic SQL) and Python, with R as an optional advantage
- Data Engineering Capability: Experience designing and implementing ETL processes for exposure data cleansing, including text mining and regex functions
- Database Management: Skilled in database production, optimisation, and ongoing maintenance to support robust analytical workflows
- API Integration: Hands-on experience working with REST and SOAP APIs, including XML, HTML, and JSON formats
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to deliver effective solutions
- Project Management: Competence in managing multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines, and ensuring quality outcomes
- Technical Expertise: Demonstrable experience in catastrophe modelling development across multiple classes, with good understanding of industry-standard models (Verisk preferred)
