What part will you play? If you’re looking for a place where you can make a meaningful difference, you’ve found it.
Markel Group, a Fortune 500 company, is a growing family of 24 operating companies. It is supported by over 22,000 associates and generates more than $15 billion in annual revenue, with our insurance operations at the core.
Our small holding company team “sits under” and supports these businesses, insuring they focus on serving their customers over the long term. Our mission is to be “the best home for our businesses,” while at the same time living the values that we call the Markel Style.
We aspire to build one of the world’s great companies by creating win-win-win outcomes for our customers, associates, and shareholders.
Our legal team sits at the intersection of strategy and execution – helping the organization stay nimble, compliant, and smart as it scales – and we’re looking to add a sharp and seasoned attorney to the team. If you value teamwork, enjoy translating complexity into clarity, and want to make a meaningful impact beyond pure legal analysis, this is the role for you.
About You
You are a respected, admired and sought-after attorney with 8-10 years of lawyering experience. Importantly, you are someone who:
Thrives on variety.
Finds joy in solving challenges that are equal parts technically demanding and highly nuanced.
Is comfortable analyzing complex, multi-faceted legal questions and exercising sound judgment.
Navigates the space between legal risk and business objectives with creativity, rigor, and calm.
Understands that people – partners, leaders, teams, stakeholders—are core to all we do.
Brings collaborative grit, checks ego at the door, values collective success and loves being part of a team.
Maintains perspective and a sense of humor (because lawyering without laughter is just stress).
What You’ll Do
Serve as a go-to legal contact for a family of operating companies that function autonomously within a public-company framework. You’ll need to balance autonomy and oversight – supporting entrepreneurial decision-making while ensuring public-company standards, SEC compliance, and ethical governance.
Translate complex legal and regulatory concepts into actionable, plain-English advice for business leaders.
Roll up your sleeves to address compliance, governance, and risk issues that resist easy categorization—and design and implement systems and frameworks to manage them.
Manage sophisticated transactions, including M&A, restructurings, and joint ventures, from early structuring and due diligence through execution and integration.
Advise on a wide range of corporate, regulatory and employment matters --including entity formation, governance, intercompany agreements, employment, compensation and incentive arrangements, complaints and investigations and new laws and regulations-- with precision and strategic insight.
Bring a solutions-oriented mindset to the organization, offering insight, making things work better, and helping teams move forward—even when the work goes beyond pure legal analysis.
Build scalable templates, playbooks, and systems that make the legal function smarter and faster.
What You Bring
A J.D., an active law license and 8-10 years of solid legal experience (mix of firm and in-house preferred).
Strong working knowledge of corporate law, employment, and compliance, and the technical skill to manage legal issues across complex corporate structures, including multi-entity and cross-border environments.
Experience supporting a public company or advising public-company clients, ideally including exposure to SEC reporting, governance and disclosure matters.
Demonstrated M&A expertise preferred. If you’ve closed a deal or three and/or handled the integration that followed, you’ll hit the ground running. Likewise, experience with employment law matters is preferred.
The ability to interpret financial information and connect it to legal risk and strategic decision-making.
Comfort using modern legal tools and technology to streamline complexity.
Curiosity, resilience, and sound judgment that thrives in a dynamic, evolving environment.
Why You’ll Love It Here
This isn’t a stay-in-your-lane role. You’ll work across industries, collaborate with extraordinary leaders, and have real influence in shaping how business and law interact across our group. If you like order but live for variety and want the opportunity to shape outcomes rather than simply advise, we’d love to meet you.
