Job Title: Lead Underwriter - Upstream Energy
Location: London
Position type: Full time, permanent
About The Job We are looking for an experienced and dynamic Lead Underwriter in Upstream Energy to join our growing Natural Resources team. In this key leadership role, you will take ownership of the underwriting of a broad portfolio of global Upstream business which includes Construction, Gulf of Mexico Wind and Offshore Renewable Wind.
As a Lead Underwriter, you will work within an agile, empowered environment—avoiding the red tape of larger corporate competitors—to guide and mentor a growing team, collaborating with brokers and clients to deliver high-quality, cross-class insurance solutions.
About the Role:
- Core Underwriting: Take a leading role in underwriting the global Upstream Energy portfolio (Oil & Gas), ensuring accuracy, profitability, and adherence to company standards.
- Renewables Growth: Act as a subject matter expert to help expand our footprint in Offshore Renewables (Offshore Wind), complementing our traditional hydrocarbon book.
- Box Leadership: Maintain a strong presence at the Box at Lloyd’s, acting as a key decision-maker and deputy to the Class Underwriter.
- Market Strategy: Work to maintain the bottom line and manage line size attrition in a softening market, while identifying high-quality new business opportunities.
- Cross-Class Collaboration: Leverage our unique "Natural Resources" structure to offer "one-stop-shop" solutions (Upstream, Downstream, Power, Renewables, and Mining) to clients.
- Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior underwriters and assistant underwriters, aiding their development into senior roles.
- Relationship Management: Utilize your existing network to deepen relationships with key brokers and clients, enhancing the team's market reputation.
What you’ll need:
- Significant experience in the energy market, with a proven track record as a Senior Underwriter.
- Technical Expertise: Deep technical knowledge of Upstream Energy risks. Experience with Offshore Renewables/Wind is highly desirable.
- Market Presence: A strong existing profile in the London Market with established broker relationships.
- Agility: The ability to make decisions quickly and autonomously, thriving in an environment that values underwriting empowerment over bureaucracy.
- Analytical Skills: Strong ability to assess complex risks and negotiate terms in a competitive, soft market environment.
- Team Spirit: A collaborative approach, with a desire to share knowledge and support the wider growth of the Natural Resources book.
