Assistant Underwriter – Power
Location: London
Position type: Full time, permanent
We are seeking an Assistant Underwriter to join our Power team at MS Amlin. As a key member of the underwriting team, you will play a meaningful role in making sound underwriting decisions and contributing to the operational delivery of our strategy – with genuine scope to develop full underwriting authority in a short timeframe.
You will sit within the Power team, part of the Natural Resources division at MS Amlin. The Power book spans a global portfolio of risks, varying in technology, complexity and size – meaning no two submissions are the same.
The Natural Resources division operates as a genuine one-stop-shop across Power, Upstream, Downstream and Mining – giving the team a distinctive market proposition and strong broker relationships built on breadth of offering. MS Amlin’s agile structure means underwriters benefit from streamlined decision-making and real autonomy at the Lloyd’s Box, without the layers found at larger corporate carriers.
The role provides a solid foundation and genuine opportunity to develop a long-term career in underwriting within a market-leading Natural Resources team.
What you’ll spend your time doing:
- Analyse and write risks in accordance with the agreed parameters – making sound, profitable long-term decisions with a focus on smart rationale underwriting
- Support quotes, underwriting and service of allocated accounts and operate within agreed authority parameters
- Develop and maintain strong client and broker relationships, demonstrating a deep understanding of their needs and the market
- Assist in arranging and attending client meetings to build strong relationships and drive business growth
- Represent MS Amlin at corporate and networking events, upholding our values and behaviours
- Track and report developments affecting the Power market and raise as appropriate to the Senior Underwriters or Underwriting Management
- Collaborate with senior underwriters to develop pricing models and ensure accurate risk assessments
- Liaise with the claims team to keep up-to-date with claims situations and ensure timely resolution
- Manage queries professionally and efficiently, ensuring excellent customer service
- Monitor premium payments and liaise with brokers and CRT as necessary
- Accuracy checking and write up notes as part of UW sign-off
- Liaise with and ensure regional compliance with underwriting management, taking corrective action where necessary and operating within agreed authorities, ensuring that underwriting controls are properly managed
What You’ll Need
- Relevant underwriting experience in Power underwriting or claims, with a clear ambition to progress to full underwriting authority within a short timeframe
- Established or developing relationships with brokers and solid knowledge of the power market
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to question the status quo and create solutions
- Diploma in CII and working towards completion of ACII
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Sound financial and commercial acumen
- Strong Excel and numeracy skills
- Self-motivation and strong organisational skills
