Reporting to the Senior Manager, MGA Underwriting the Senior Underwriter will apply portfolio management skills and underwriting experience to support Sovereign’s delegated authority underwriting portfolio. This role will play a material role in driving Sovereign’s growth objectives with a focus on accelerating profitability through our delegated authority distribution partnerships.
The role will oversee the delegated authority contracts through audits and analysis to ensure rate adequacy and alignment to our risk appetite. Further, they will take the lead or participate in the analysis of an assigned portfolio to drive and maintain profitability.
The role will also play an important part in executing our partner strategy by maintaining, developing and expanding relationships with distribution partnerships.
How you will create impact:
- Responding to referrals on complex accounts under delegated authority, keeping them at an acceptable level aligned with the general intent of the portfolio’s delegated nature. This includes reviewing and analyzing complex insurance applications, policy renewals, endorsements, and related documents to determine risk level and potential exposure.
- Actively managing portfolio growth and profitability while ensuring general adherence to the delegated facility intent.
- Leading or participating in the external underwriting audit process, including providing follow up support to ensure action plans addressing identified issues are completed in a timely manner.
- Providing advice and guidance on underwriting authority, including approvals, as well as technical underwriting advice to delegated authority partner underwriting personnel, including management.
- Maintaining and further developing relationships with delegated authority partners by marketing Sovereign’s unique value proposition and capitalizing on opportunities for viable insurance solution expansion. This includes attending client meetings, delivering presentations or workshops, and engaging and connecting relevant internal stakeholders.
To join our team:
- A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in the insurance industry within senior underwriting roles
- Experience in in other lines of business like commercial property, casualty and cyber would be considered an asset
- Bilingualism (French/English) would be considered an asset.
- CIP and/or CRM designation preferred.
- Proven relationship building experience, specifically working with delegated authority partners
- Strong communication skills to effectively manage internal relationships and external partnerships to navigate through complex business cases.
- This position primarily works with majority non-francophone groups, and teams located outside of Québec, and requires proficiency in English. The essential non-French duties are not assignable to adjacent or other team members.

Expected salary/hourly range $83,774 - $133,700+
The salary amount for the successful candidate is determined by Co-operators in its discretion and will vary depending on several criteria including but not limited to: local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education.
Employees may also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn additional compensation tied to individual and/or business performance, or other business metrics.
