Reporting to the Director, Product and Underwriting, the Manager, Underwriting Operations is responsible for leading an Underwriting and Regulatory Reporting team within our Corporate Personal Insurance area. The manager is accountable for leading a team responsible for regulatory reporting, enhancing underwriting processes, and ensuring portfolio strategy statements are clear and communicated. This role is also responsible for monitoring, improving, documenting and executing our underwriting control environment with the operations teams.
Main responsibilities include:
- Lead a team of Analysts within the Corporate Underwriting team, providing inspirational leadership and direction
- Effectively and efficiently manage the regulatory and industry reporting requirements for Personal Insurance
- Responsible for the development, rollout and training of underwriting frameworks and guidelines that algin with our portfolio strategy
- Develop and implement controls and strategies to support profitable growth, enhance underwriting quality and mitigate risks
- Partner with others, including risk and governance on the underwriting philosophy while maintaining the integrity of the portfolio strategy and practices
- Assist with product development, innovation and change efforts with Personal Insurance Initiatives teams, TS, and other internal partners
- Work closely with regulators, committees and stakeholders in various jurisdictions
- Support the execution of the Personal Insurance business strategy to deliver on the operational plan
- Consult with Portfolio Management and Pricing to understand trends and business quality, to support operational objectives
- Research, analyze and present recommendations to PI leadership on emerging product and underwriting trends/opportunities/threats
- Be a subject matter expert as it relates to technical underwriting providing guidance and direction to various stakeholders as needed
- Provide competitive insights when required to support ongoing changes to products and underwriting criteria
What do you bring to the role?
- University degree
- Industry-related certification is an asset (CIP/FCIP/CRM or equivalent)
- 5-8 years of related industry experience
- Bilingual candidates English and French is an asset
- Prior leadership experience within the Insurance industry
- In-depth underwriting knowledge in one or more lines of business including wordings, underwriting guidelines and policy terms and conditions
- Strong collaboration skills and stakeholder management
- Excellent analytical and problem solving with the ability to select and implement best solution
- Advanced decision-making skills
- Excellent communication skills (written/oral) required with the ability to foster positive relationship across teams
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of products
High degree of proficiency with English required to service customers, both internal to the company and external, across Canada
