The opportunity:
At Markel International, our Catastrophe Management team is an empowered and autonomous team, providing critical support across a diverse range of classes including Marine, Energy, Political Violence, Accident and Health, Casualty, and Cyber.
What We Do:
- Pre-Underwriting Analytics: Dive deep into data to uncover insights that drive smart underwriting decisions.
- Class and Entity Level Reporting: Deliver detailed and impactful reports that inform our strategies and actions.
- Ad-Hoc Analysis: Tackle unique challenges with creative solutions to support our underwriting teams.

What you’ll be doing:
- Manage and lead the Catastrophe Management function
- Build and maintain a strong relationship with underwriting teams
- Oversee the production of quarterly and ad hoc internal reporting
- Ensure external reporting is completed to a high standard and meets all deadlines and requirements
- Progress the Exposure Management function to improve efficiency and further Markel’s understanding of risk
- Pro-active contribution to our underwriting portfolio management collaborating with our Head of Underwriting Risk and the broader Risk Management and Underwriting Operations teams
- Build and maintain effective relationships with all internal and external contacts including Lloyd’s Exposure Management and software providers such as Verisk.
- Present confidently to the board, Lloyd’s and the PRA.
Our must-haves:
- Proven catastrophe modelling experience in the London market
- Experience of managing a team of analysts effectively
- A thorough understanding of Natural and Non Natural Catastrophe Models
- Excellent IT skills with a strong knowledge of SQL and VBA
- Strong understanding of insurance and reinsurance product offerings
- Proven experience with catastrophe management best practices and portfolio roll-up
- Experience of building and maintaining successful relationships with internal and external contacts
- The ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
