We are looking for an individual to support underwriters in risk selection, perform technology reviews, advise on risk mitigation and collaborate to support and develop the Engineering and Construction division.

The newly-formed Construction & Engineering team will write a broad portfolio of single project and annually renewing construction risks across a broad range of industries including but not limited to the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, power generation and other industrial / commercial risks on a world-wide basis. We will also look for involvement in residential and civil projects to balance the portfolio.

A great emphasis is placed on long term partnerships with both brokers and assureds. We write business on both Syndicate 3000 paper at Lloyd’s and through MISE (Europe) and Markel International Insurance Company Limited.
What you’ll be doing:
- Develop a book of both open market and delegated underwriting authority business in the newly formed Construction & Engineering team.
- Develop distribution to access new business for Markel, working closely with the Distribution Strategies and Business Development team as appropriate
- Promote collaboration with other Markel offices to advance the adoption of best practice across the business
- To assist the underwriting and management team with preparation of business plans and Management Information to manage a profitable book of business.
- Act as advocate for Markel and the Construction & Engineering product line and communicate regularly with underwriters and divisional management as the need arises.
- To undertake domestic and international travel when appropriate.
- Business planning: Involvement with business planning process as required
- Marketing / broker development: Responsible for building and maintaining excellent relationships with their targeted brokers and involvement in marketing initiatives as required
- Product development
- Underwriting standards: Ensure that underwriting standards and procedures are complied with for their line and that all data input and systems are in line with agreed procedures for their team
