We have an excellent opportunity in our OCUO team as an Oversight Manager to support the team reporting to the Head of Technical Underwriting and Oversight to lead the management, operations, and review of the OCUO Oversight Framework, including reviews of the processes and controls within our underwriting areas to ensure compliance with a key OCUO standards.

Business Unit overview:
The team supports the Chief Underwriting Officer in carrying out their responsibilities for underwriting profitability and oversight. These include overall responsibility for combined ratio performance, business planning, underwriting risk, delivering good customer outcomes and ensuring compliance with internal and external underwriting standards, limits and appetites including local regulations such as those set by Lloyd’s. The team provides support for both formal and informal underwriter referrals on risks and wordings that are outside an underwriter’s authority or where advice is sought.

What you’ll be doing:
Underwriting Oversight Framework
- Lead the delivery and management the OCUO Oversight Framework, ensuring its relevance, regulatory alignment, and consistent application across in-scope underwriting areas.
- Lead the coordination, scoping, execution, and follow-up of underwriting assurance reviews, including:
- Attestations
- Risk Control Attestation Reviews
- Sample and Deep Dive Reviews
- Data Reviews
- Conduct thematic analysis and trend identification across findings to support continuous improvement
- This will include performing some of these reviews and using the skills of colleagues (including the Oversight Analyst) within the Technical and Oversight pillars within OCUO to deliver parts of the Oversight Framework.
- Prepare and/or oversee reports resulting from the oversight reviews.
- Ensure implementation of the Framework across Markel International entities (e.g. Lloyd’s Syndicate 3000, Markel Insurance SE; National Markets Canada; National Markets UK; National Markets Europe; London Wholesale; and APAC Wholesale) and other in-scope Markel operations (e.g. US Wholesale & Specialty).
- This work will involve UK and international travel in order to conduct some of the oversight reviews at Markel International’s local offices.
Underwriting Oversight Group
- Chair the monthly Underwriting Oversight Group (UOG).
Underwriting Breach Process
- Lead ‘Breach Panel’ referrals, raising and reporting per the International Breach Framework.
Operational Oversight & Systems
- Act as owner of the OCUO Oversight SharePoint environment, ensuring structured access, current documentation, and governance compliance.
People Management & Team Development
- Manage and coach an Oversight Analyst, providing direction, development, and support in line with OCUO objectives.
Key Skills:
- Strong understanding of insurance underwriting operations, including regulatory frameworks (e.g. Lloyd’s, PRA, FCA).
- Demonstrated experience in managing assurance or oversight reviews, ideally within a second-line, underwriting management, or governance function.
- Familiarity with three-lines-of-defence governance models and assurance planning/reporting processes.
- Proven ability to plan, structure, and run governance group meetings and working committees.
- Skilled in stakeholder management and able to influence at all levels across underwriting, risk, internal audit, and support functions.
- Strong analytical, reporting, and documentation skills—able to produce high-quality review outputs and formal reports.
- Experience working with action-tracking tools and document control systems.
- Prior line management experience is desirable, but not required.
