The Role
Canopius is a leading global specialty (re)insurer with a diverse and highly specialised underwriting portfolio across the Natural Resources sector. Natural Resources at Canopius encompasses upstream and downstream operations, heavy industry, mining, power generation, and renewables. Although the portfolio spans a broad range of industrial risks, this role places particular emphasis on Energy, and we are specifically seeking a candidate with strong technical expertise in Upstream, Downstream, and/or Power risks. As a Senior Claims Adjuster – Natural Resources (Energy Specialist), you will support a wide portfolio of Natural Resources risks while acting as a subject matter expert for Energy claims, particularly in the Upstream, Downstream, and/or Power sectors. You will proactively manage complex technical claims from initial notification through to resolution, bringing deep Energy market knowledge and sound judgement to the adjustment process. You will build strong working relationships with underwriters, actuaries, brokers, and external advisers, ensuring Energy related insights help inform and strengthen portfolio performance.
You will ensure all claims are handled in accordance with the Canopius Claims Manual, the company’s reserving philosophy, and applicable regulatory requirements, while delivering a consistently high standard of service. Your technical Energy background will be central to enhancing Canopius' capabilities within the wider Natural Resources class.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle Natural Resources claims from first notification through to settlement.
- Investigate, evaluate, and adjust claims, reviewing policy terms, reports, damage assessments, and expert opinions.
- Determine coverage, liability, and appropriate reserves, revising reserves as necessary.
- Appoint and manage external experts, including loss adjusters, engineers, and legal counsel.
- Deliver high quality claims service in line with SLAs and KPIs.
- Negotiate settlements and authorise payments within delegated authority.
- Prepare clear, concise claim reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Act as a technical escalation point and provide guidance to junior adjusters.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with brokers, clients, underwriters, and stakeholders.
- Monitor claim trends, emerging risks, and portfolio performance.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, Lloyd’s standards, and company procedures.
- Support continuous improvement, including peer reviews.
- Attend client meetings and contribute to claims reviews.
Skills

- Extensive experience adjusting claims in the Lloyd’s / London Market, including Natural Resources and large technical losses.
- Strong knowledge of the Lloyd’s Claims Lead Arrangements, natural resources market practices, and London Market operations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and reserving discipline.
- Proficiency in claims management systems and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast paced environment.
